Volunteer monitoring efforts not only expand the scientific base of watershed protection and remediation programs, but are also the catalyst for education and conservation action initiatives.
The number of volunteer monitoring programs (VMP) in the United States has expanded dramatically since the mid-90’s. VMP’s vary from basic sampling utilized primarily for educational purposes, to intensive watershed-scale programs, generating helpful data used by watershed managers.
World Water Watch supports VMP’s in the U.S., as well as other countries, by assisting with watershed monitoring system design, implementation and operation. In addition, WWW provides guidance with respect to quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) practices. The QA/QC aspect of volunteer monitoring is perhaps the greatest obstacle to incorporating or comparing VMP data with other sample data. WWW also assists VMP’s in locating and utilizing resources and expert guidance.
